EngQuest 2007.

Murrumburrah Public School Students

2nd place in the State Finals,

Winners for Riverina in

EngQuest 2006.

During the past two terms of school our Year 2 class and a group of Year 3 / 4 students have participated in EngQuest 2006.  EngQuest is a program of Engineers Australia and is supported by the Australian Government through a Science Connections Programme Grant administered by the Department of Education, Science and Training.

The students have learnt skills in team work and communication, design, construction and evaluation.  They have all had so much fun they didn’t even notice they were developing key skills in science, technology and mathematics and achieving their learning outcomes in these areas.  Students from Murrumburrah Public participated in these fun and interactive hands-on projects for Lower Primary and Middle Primary categories.

The Lower Primary category required the children to investigate seven simple machines, design and construct a catapult that could launch a marshmallow more than 1 metre in distance.  The catapults had to be built from recycled household materials.  The Year 2 class was divided into five teams including The Wedges, The Screws, The Pulleys, The Levers and The Gears.

The Middle Primary category required the children to investigate, design and construct a mechanism using a pulley system.  The Year 3 / 4 groups included three teams including the Force and Friction, Simple Machines and Pulley Power.

As well as constructing the pulley systems and catapults all teams were required to submit a comprehensive portfolio detailing the work they had completed over the past two terms.

EngQuest 2006 judging occurred recently and our creative Murrumburrah students won the regional level of this competition.  They then went on to achieve fantastic success at the state finals in Sydney in August.  More on this soon.

All students will receive a certificate of participation recognising their efforts.

Results for judging at Riverina level saw some of our teams through to the state level.
