Parents, School and the Community

THE SCHOOL COUNCIL

Murrumburrah Public School has a School Council which meets regularly to discuss and make recommendations for the general policy direction of the school.

Please show your interest and support by informing your parent representatives on the council of your views on school directions and policy and/or by standing for election on the council and/or by voting when a ballot is held.

School Council Presidents Message

The Murrumburrah Public School Council meets twice a term, generally on the second and the second last Tuesday nights of Term, at 7:30 pm in the staff room.

The overall aim of the Council is to enable formal school community participation in the planning and management of our school, to foster closer links between our school and the community.  The Council has a number of objectives designed to achieve the overall aim, including determining broad administrative, financial and educational policies and encouraging and promoting community participation in the school.

The Council membership consists of staff, parent, P and C Association and community representatives.  The current members of Council are:

            Colin Palmer – Staff Representative
            Grace Morris - Staff Representative

            Gabi Chan - President
            Vicki Fairfield-Smith  -Parent Representative/Secretary
            Darren Sargent  - Parent Representative

            Lauren Masson - Parent Representative
            Kate Goodlock - P&C Representative
            Peter Blair – Principal/Executive Officer

Elections are held to appoint Council members, with all parents eligible to vote. The term of office is for two years.

Parents are encouraged to approach any of the members if they have any concerns or ideas that they wish to be discussed at a Council meeting, or if they would like any further information regarding the Council.

THE  PARENTS  &  CITIZENS’  ASSOCIATION:

This Association is an important part of the school organisation as it can greatly assist the principal and staff in the functioning of the school and in the welfare of the pupils.  Meetings of the Association provide an opportunity for information to be given in detail to parents and for discussion to take place.  Your attendance at meetings would be very welcome and much appreciated.

Murrumburrah P and C Presidents Message

Our P and C Association plays an important part in the running of Murrumburrah Public School.  Through P & C meetings parents can keep in contact with the running of the school and also express opinions and ideas.  Monthly meetings are held at 7.00pm on the second Tuesday of the month in the staff room.

Some of the fundraising events we have been involved in throughout the years are family trivia night, street stalls, Mother’s Day stalls for the children, Mars chocolate drives, Theme balls, golf day and bulb drives.  These have all proved to be very successful.

Funds raised this year have supported the purchase of new school competition cricket set and various resources throughout the school.  The support of parents is essential in the success of these events and is much appreciated.  We are hopeful that this level of parental support can be maintained so we can continue with future projects.

We will continue to support State sporting representatives and student leaders attending the Young Leaders Conference.

We look forward to seeing parents, old and new at our regular meetings and hope that you and your child’s years at Murrumburrah Public School are enjoyable ones.

Kate Goodlock - President

Communications between School and Home

Written Reports:

Detailed, comprehensive reports are sent home during Term 2 and Term 4. These reports give an overall view of your child’s progress and development.  The reports summarise strengths and weaknesses and provide space for parents to state any concerns they would like to discuss with the teacher.

Work Sample Books and Parent Interviews:

Parents are strongly urged to come along for a parent teacher interview.  Parents are also welcome to seek an interview on receipt of the written report during Terms 2 and 4. Work Sample Books are sent home in the 8th week of each term. These books give examples of the work that your children have been completing during the previous term. The students are proud of their work sample books and we ask that you encourage the areas that they feel proud of and support their development of other areas.

Interviews at other times:

Apart from the interviews scheduled for parents to discuss with the teacher the progress and development of their children, parents should feel free to arrange to see a teacher any time they see a need.  The teaching staff, and the Principal are always willing to discuss any concerns you may have about the school at mutually convenient times.  The best place to discuss any problems or difficulties is at the school.  It is often surprising how an exchange of views, based on full and correct information, can clear up misunderstandings or worries the parent or teacher may have.

 Contacting Children at School

Parents delivering lunches, messages etc to their child during the day are to leave them at the office.  You would understand that classrooms are busy places and parents going to classroom doors interrupt the teacher and pupils, causing distractions. Also, for the children’s safety and security, the school needs to control the access of adults to the school grounds.

Collecting your child during school hours:

Parents wishing to take a child during the day are also to call at the office so that an ancillary staff member can collect the child.  Parents wishing to take their child out of the school grounds are to either call at the office or see the teacher on playground duty (if after 3:05 pm).

Unauthorised Contact:

If your child has problems with other children, please contact the class teacher or the principal so that the matter can be investigated.  Parents are not to enter the School grounds to talk to other students.

Custody and Access:

If custody or access becomes a contentious matter between parents, the school can be bound only by orders issued by a court of law.  Where such        orders exist, a copy should be sent to the school for confidential filing.  Without such restraining orders, the school cannot deny reasonable access by either parent.

Emergency Contact Numbers:

It is vitally important that parents keep the school up to date with access phone numbers for use in the case of emergencies. If you change your phone numbers, add a mobile phone number, or change the person who is your next contact - please let the school know, for your child/ren’s safety.

School Plans

School plans are written by the School Council, with input from the P and C, staff, students and community and revised each year.

Parents are encouraged to read the School Plans and to make suggestions to the School Council via the President or the Principal.

The plans give direction to the school in such areas as:

                        1.         Students
                        2.         Curriculum
                        3.         Staff
                        4.         Parents and Community

                        5.

SCHOOL BUDGET

The School budget is drawn up by the School Council at the end of the school year.  This is a flexible policy which helps resource and implement the goals for the next and future years.  It is tied to the School plans.

ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORTING

An Annual Report and Financial Statement is prepared by the Principal and presented to the District Superintendent and School community at the end of the year.  This records achievements of the past year and the focus for the next year.

 THE NEWSLETTER

Each Wednesday afternoon, the eldest student in the family will be given the school newsletter. The newsletter covers information such as excursions and performances, class awards, assemblies, happenings within the school and sporting results.  It is important for parents and students to read the newsletter each week, because it is the main form of communication between the school and the families of the school.

Student Support

School Counsellor:

The school weekly has the services of a School Counsellor who provides valuable assistance in testing and diagnosing learning difficulties and counselling children and parents about academic, social, emotional and physical development.  Please ring the office for an appointment.

Occupational Therapist:

The school at present has very limited access to the services of an      Occupational Therapist.  The Occupational Therapist works with children with Sensory Integrative problems whose physical and academic skills may not be on a level with their peers and who may show abnormal or anti-social behaviour.

Speech Pathologist:

The school has occasional access to the services of a Speech Pathologist.  If your child has abnormal or delayed language patterns, or some physical speech impairment, please contact the school about possible placement on this program.

 Community Nurse:

The Community Nurse carries out basic health screenings and notifies parents if any problems are detected which require follow-up treatment. The Community Nurse can also advise parents on the home management of health problems.

First Aid and Illness at School:

Children who are sick before they leave home should be kept at home as the school does not have the facilities or staff to cater for ill children.

If your child becomes ill at school, they will be kept as comfortable as possible, until either you or your emergency contacts can be contacted and make arrangements for their withdrawal from the school.
